Abstract

Mathematics is one of the most important forms of knowledge used in everyday human life. Although mathematics is often associated with classrooms, examinations, formulas, and abstract calculations, its practical applications extend far beyond formal education. People use mathematical concepts when managing money, shopping, cooking, travelling, planning time, comparing prices, interpreting information, measuring objects, making decisions, and organizing household activities. Mathematical literacy enables individuals to understand numerical information and apply mathematical reasoning to practical situations. The importance of such skills has also been recognized internationally, with the OECD describing mathematical literacy as the capacity to reason mathematically and use mathematical concepts, procedures, facts, and tools in real-world contexts. (OECD) This paper examines the role of mathematics in everyday life and discusses its applications in personal finance, shopping, household management, cooking, transportation, construction, employment, business, technology, health-related decision-making, and education. It also considers the relationship between mathematical knowledge and problem-solving ability. Particular attention is given to basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, measurements, averages, and simple statistics. The paper argues that practical mathematics is not limited to professional mathematicians or scientists; rather, it is a life skill required by people in almost every social and occupational context. Regular engagement with numeracy can also contribute to maintaining and developing mathematical skills. (OECD) The study concludes that mathematics education should place greater emphasis on meaningful real-life applications so that learners can understand mathematics as a practical tool for decision-making rather than merely as an academic subject.
